Professor Chu was a renowned researcher and educator in optical communication. Besides his passion about scientific research, he was an active and ardent lay Christian leader. In addition to all his many other involvements in various Christian ministries, he was the first Chairman of Chinese Christian Mission Australia (CCMA) when it was started in Sydney at 1993.

The Thanksgiving Service of Late Professor Chu was held at WSCCC on 20 March, 2008. The church was crowded with over 400 people. Some came all the way from US, Canada & Hong Kong.
